about

This song has a very strange back story. I dreamt that I'd met Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson and he'd asked me to write lyrics about a boy and a lighthouse. When I woke up, I wrote those lyrics which turned into a song which I called Salty Old Dog. It is about that boy who grew up to be a sailor, living his life on the sea, avoiding the rocks, guided by a lighthouse. The song was inspired solely by the dream I'd had. Weeks after I completed the song, I discovered that Jethro Tull's new song The Navigators is also about sailors on the sea. Our YouTube videos contain similar imagery, we both mention gods of the sea and our ships both sink at the end! I started creating my song a day before their song was released. I had no prior knowledge of it at all. Is this a story of telepathy or just a very strange coincidence?

lyrics

Verse 1:
A young boy played on the sand and he stared out to sea
And the man he became
Built a ship that he named Fantasy
When the lighthouse called
Stay away from the rocks
His heart echoed hard with electric shocks
When danger came so near
He always steered well clear

Chorus:
When mist turns to fog
Salty old dogs on the sea
Turn from the light
It will all be alright
They can see
But a sailor knows
When his time has come
Poseidon will rise up to call him home
Mist turns to fog
Salty old dogs sail free

Verse 2:
The siren calls
As the storm rolls over the sea
He sailed all his life
At least since he turned 17
When the lighthouse cries
Beware the rocks
The old man’s eyes
In light are locked
Danger is in the air
And he finds he’s drawing near

Chorus:
When mist turns to fog
Salty old dogs on the sea
Turn from the light
It will all be alright
They can see
But a sailor knows
When his time has come
Poseidon will rise up to call him home
Mist turns to fog
Salty old dogs sail free

Bridge:
He sailed so far
By the northern star
The ocean life
Was his only wife
And when he finally heard the call
That said fly before you fall
Fantasy guides him home
The boy in the sand all alone

End chorus:
When night turns to day
The wreckage remains in the sea
And they thought that the light
Had failed in the night to be seen
But the sailor knew that his time had come
Poseidon decided to take him home
Mist turns to fog
Salty old dogs sail free
Mist turns to fog
Another young boy stares long out to sea

about

Angie Kuske UK

I'm a Singer-Songwriter based in Kent, UK. I started writing lyrics in the early 90s until work took over. I gradually taught myself how to use Garageband and now create all my songs from start to finish. I write unique, catchy pop songs with an 80s influence. I believe my lyrics have meaning and imagery which I hope people can relate to. Music links: linktr.ee/AngieKuskeMusic ... more
